First steps

After installing AnnexGroup, you set up the first domain and the admin account through the setup assistant.

Step 1: Initial configuration

  1. Open https://<your-domain>/setup.
  2. Enter your primary domain (for example example.com).
  3. Set the first admin user and a separate root password.

Security note: The root password should not be identical to the admin password, and should be used for emergencies only.

Step 2: Check DNS records

Under Administration → DNS record suggestions you will find the recommended records for:

For deliverability:

  • MX (incoming mail)
  • SPF (sender authorisation)
  • DKIM (signature)
  • DMARC (policy)
  • MTA-STS (transport security, two records)

For setup from the address alone — so that a mail program can find everything else from first@your-domain.com by itself:

  • _imaps._tcp and _submission._tcp (SRV) for incoming and outgoing mail
  • _caldavs._tcp and _carddavs._tcp (SRV) for calendar and address book
  • autoconfig. and autodiscover. (CNAME) for the lookup paths used by Thunderbird and Outlook

These six have no effect unless the certificate covers them. autoconfig.<your-domain> and autodiscover.<your-domain> belong in the same certificate as additional names — as does the name that MX and SRV point at (by default mail.<your-domain>, configurable via smtp_hostname). If a name is missing, the mail program drops the connection before it reads the answer; the system status names what is missing.

Step 3: Create the first users

Go to Administration → Users and create mailboxes. Every user automatically receives the standard folders Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Trash and Archive.

Step 4: Connect clients

  • Webmail: https://<your-domain>/access/inbox
  • CalDAV/CardDAV: https://<your-domain>/dav/
  • SMTP: smtp://<your-domain>:587 (STARTTLS)
  • IMAP: imap://<your-domain>:143 (STARTTLS)

Apple Mail: Set-up with only an address and password does not work there — a packet capture shows that Apple Mail never queries our server during it. Enter the server name by hand (<your-domain>); set-up succeeds with it. Calendars are found automatically.

Apple Contacts: Since 1.0.2, Apple Contacts sets up in "Automatic" mode with a bare address — the server adds the domain. Address books and the company directory arrive; the account can be chosen as the default for new contacts.
